A hermaphroditic Port Jackson shark, Heterodontus portusjacksoni , with complete and separate female and male reproductive tracts

چکیده
One of 353 Port Jackson sharks, Heterodontus portusjacksoni, caught o¡ the southern coast of Western Australia, was a hermaphrodite. The female reproductive tract consisted of a large (functional) right ovary with three large yolked ova, a small non-functional left ovary and two well-developed uteri and oviducal glands. The male tract comprised two conspicuous but undeveloped testes, two vas deferens and two calci¢ed claspers with grooves. This individual represents the ¢rst published example of hermaphroditism in the order Heterodontiformes and is a rare example of an elasmobranch with a complete suite of both male and female reproductive structures.

The blood respiratory, haematological, acid-base and ionic status of the Port Jackson shark, Heterodontus portusjacksoni, during recovery from anaesthesia and surgery: a comparison with sampling by direct caudal puncture
The effects of caudal cannulation on the blood physiology of the Port Jackson shark, Heterodontus portusjacksoni, were investigated in sharks given between 4 and 72 h to recover from surgery. Neither the PaO2–PvO2 difference nor the CaO2–CvO2 difference of cannulated sharks fluctuated throughout the sampling period. The plasma acidosis exhibited 4 h after surgery was partially compensated after...
متن کاملThe function of the conus arteriosus in the Port Jackson shark, Heterodontus portusjacksoni.
The conus arteriosus is a muscular chamber interposed between the ventricle and ventral aorta in Elasmobranchii, Holocephalii and the more primitive families of bony fish. Since Duverney (1702) suggested that it functioned as an extra ventricle, it has been variously regarded as an elastic reservoir to minimize pressure fluctuations (Keith, 1924; Daniel, 1934), an accessory pumping chamber (Geg...
متن کاملPatterns of Occurrence of Sharks in Sydney Harbour, a Large Urbanised Estuary
Information about spatial and temporal variability in the distribution and abundance of shark-populations are required for their conservation, management and to update measures designed to mitigate human-shark interactions. However, because some species of sharks are mobile, migratory and occur in relatively small numbers, estimating their patterns of distribution and abundance can be very diff...
متن کاملVisual resolution and contrast sensitivity in two benthic sharks.
Sharks have long been described as having 'poor' vision. They are cone monochromats and anatomical estimates suggest they have low spatial resolution. However, there are no direct behavioural measurements of spatial resolution or contrast sensitivity. This study estimates contrast sensitivity and spatial resolution of two species of benthic sharks, the Port Jackson shark, Heterodontus portusjac...
متن کاملCan a Threshold Value Be Used to Classify Chondrichthyan Reproductive Modes: Systematic Review and Validation Using an Oviparous Species
The maternal-embryonic nutritional relationship in chondrichthyans has been poorly explored. Consequently, accurately discerning between their different reproductive modes is difficult; especially lecithotrophy and incipient histotrophy. This present study is the first to assess changes in mass throughout embryonic development of an oviparous chondrichthyan other than Scyliorhinus canicula. Het...
